Refrigerator leaks water, slows down cooling: Women can learn how to fix it themselves, no need to call a technician

articleUseronApril 24, 2026

Many people experience this problem at home: their refrigerator leaks water and its cooling gradually decreases. This often causes frustration, leading them to think they need to call a technician and spend money. However, the truth, which many people don’t know, especially women who manage the household, is that many of these problems are simple and can be fixed on your own without any help.

In this article, we’ll explain in a simple and clear way how you can fix your refrigerator if it starts leaking water or its cooling decreases, with practical and proven steps.

The first thing you need to know is that water leaks often have simple causes. One of the most common causes is a blockage in the refrigerator’s drain. This drain is responsible for draining the water that collects during the cooling process. If it becomes blocked with dirt or food scraps, the water starts to accumulate and then leaks out.

To fix this problem, you only need a few simple tools: a thin stick or a small wire, and a glass of hot water. Try to find the opening, which is usually at the bottom of the refrigerator inside, and then gently insert the stick to remove the dirt. After that, pour some hot water over it to clean it thoroughly. You’ll notice the difference immediately.

The second problem that causes water to leak is the door seal. If it’s torn or doesn’t adhere properly, hot air enters the refrigerator and creates condensation, which then turns into water. The solution here is simple: clean the seal thoroughly with soap and water, and check if it’s still usable. If it’s badly damaged, you can replace it for a small price compared to a major repair.

Now let’s move on to the problem of insufficient cooling, which is also frustrating. The first possible reason is that the refrigerator is too full. When the refrigerator is overfilled, the cold air doesn’t circulate properly, which affects cooling. The solution is to arrange the food and leave some space for air to flow through.

Also, you need to pay attention to the refrigerator’s location. If it’s near the stove, oven, or in direct sunlight, it will have to work harder to cool down, which reduces its efficiency. Try to place it in a well-ventilated spot away from heat.

One thing that’s often overlooked is cleaning the coils (les coiles) at the back of the refrigerator. These are responsible for cooling, and when they get dusty, their efficiency decreases. You can easily clean them using a brush or even a vacuum cleaner. Just make sure to turn off the refrigerator first to be safe.

Another important point is the thermostat. Its settings might have changed without you noticing. Make sure it’s set to the right temperature—not too cold, not too soft. A medium temperature is usually best.

If you notice your refrigerator making a strange noise or not cooling at all, the problem might be more serious. But before you call a technician, try these simple steps; you’ll likely be able to fix the problem yourself ️️ Continue on the next page ️️
