You should not treat yourself without consulting your doctor: 8 tablets that affect the kidneys.

The kidneys play a vital role in our bodies: they filter the blood, excrete waste products, regulate water and electrolyte balance, and control blood pressure. However, some commonly used medications can cause kidney damage if taken excessively or without medical supervision.

Here are 8 commonly used medications that can affect kidney health and should therefore be used with caution, especially by people with a history of kidney problems.

1. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

Medications such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and diclofenac are commonly used to treat pain and reduce inflammation. However, long-term use or high doses can reduce blood flow to the kidneys and lead to acute kidney failure, especially in people who are dehydrated or have low blood pressure.

Recommendation:  Use only when necessary and for short periods of time as directed by a doctor.

2. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)

They are used to treat heartburn and stomach ulcers. Omeprazole, lansoprazole, and esomeprazole are common examples. Studies have found a link between long-term use and an increased risk of chronic kidney disease.

Recommendation:  Do not use the medication for longer than prescribed by your doctor. If you experience frequent digestive problems, you should consider alternatives.
