Close or open windows in strong winds: Many people do this wrong.

articleUseronMay 9, 2026

Plywood and heavy-duty plastic sheeting can serve as an additional “protective barrier” for windows, especially in high-rise buildings. Using sturdy screws, homeowners can attach plywood sheets the size of the window to the outside of the window frame. Remember to attach them to the wall around the window, not directly to the frame.

Rigid plastic tarpaulins should be securely attached to the balcony outside the window. These solutions can help prevent some of the wind from hitting the house window directly.

2. Use sturdy braces to secure the window.

In addition to plywood or tarpaulins, homeowners can secure the doors with braces. To ensure stability, these braces must be securely attached to both the window frame and the surrounding walls.

3. Place sandbags or heavy objects to block the wind.

If your house has large doors, throw sandbags, large bags of water, or bags of bricks in front of them to block the wind. This strategy reduces the direct impact of the wind on the glass doors.
